Ashtanga Yoga is a highly structured yoga class which contain a number of set sequences to be followed. This form of Yoga was developed in the 20th Century by Pattabhi Jois and is often considered to instrumental in the modern day embodiment of the Classical form of traditional Indian Yoga.
The focus of Asthanga yoga is cleansing or purification of the body and mind. The practice has a strong sense of purpose as your are required to move quickly and dynamically which can in turn cultivate a sense of immersion into the practice and removes external distractions. It consumes your physical and mental self and generates an enormous amount “tapas” which is the burn that is generated within the body.
If you enjoy an intense and strenuous practice that involves routine and structure and becomes increasingly familiar with each session then Ashtanga is the practice for you.
Cautious, beginners may wish to try other forms of yoga and practice some of the more basic yoga poses before jumping into what can often be a challenging form of yoga. This does not mean that any true beginner should not take this class but more that they should be fully aware of what to expect if they attend.
Those with injuries, or joints or muscles that have a tendency to be fragile of sensitive should avoid Ashtanga classes.
